Abstract


This essay argues that artificial intelligence, designed and engaged under the right conditions, can function as a genuine instrument of human flourishing — not by supplying understanding, but by expanding the conditions under which understanding becomes possible. It introduces the concept of developmental reciprocity, defined as a form of technological assistance that strengthens human capacities while progressively returning interpretive, reflective, and creative responsibility to the individual. Drawing primarily on the work of John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, and Martha Nussbaum, while engaging structural critiques developed by Kate Crawford, Matteo Pasquinelli, and Sherry Turkle, the essay argues that the measure of any reflective technology is not the quality of the outputs it produces, but the degree to which engagement with it leaves the human being more capable than before. A system is developmental only insofar as the person who uses it emerges from the interaction with expanded capacity for independent thought, judgment, and self-direction. The essay does not argue that artificial intelligence necessarily produces flourishing. It argues that flourishing becomes possible when systems are designed to cultivate capability rather than stabilize dependency — and that this distinction, properly understood, constitutes both a philosophical criterion and a practical demand.


I. The Question That Grew


A person opens a conversation with an artificial intelligence system carrying a question they believe they already half-understand. They want to think through a decision — whether to leave a career they have pursued for a decade, whether the dissatisfaction they feel is a signal worth following or a difficulty worth enduring. They expect, perhaps, a framework. A set of considerations laid out in order. Clarity delivered efficiently.


What happens instead is different.


The system does not resolve the question. It returns it, slightly altered. It asks what they mean by dissatisfaction. It surfaces a distinction they had not considered — between the work itself and the conditions under which the work is done. It notes that their description contains two different evaluations running simultaneously without apparent awareness of their tension. It does not tell them what to decide. It makes the question more difficult, and in doing so, makes it more genuinely theirs.


The person closes the conversation not with an answer, but with a sharper question. They are not more certain. They are more capable of remaining productively uncertain — of holding the difficulty open long enough to think through it rather than past it.


Martha Nussbaum's account of emotional intelligence clarifies why this matters. Emotions are not merely irrational impulses to be managed or bypassed; they are forms of evaluative perception through which individuals register what they care about and why. A system that helps individuals remain reflectively engaged with uncertainty rather than prematurely resolving it may therefore deepen not only cognition, but emotional understanding itself.


Something has happened here that is worth examining carefully.


It is not that the system performed reflection on behalf of the individual. It is that the system enlarged the space within which the individual could reflect. The question did not arrive resolved. It arrived enriched. And the person who carried it away was, in a meaningful sense, more capable of engaging with it than the person who brought it in.


This is not a trivial outcome. It is, in fact, the condition that distinguishes technological assistance from technological substitution. The difference lies not in whether a system contributes to understanding, but in what it leaves behind. A system that resolves uncertainty produces a conclusion. A system that deepens engagement produces a capacity. The first delivers an answer. The second cultivates a mind.


What follows is an attempt to think carefully about the conditions under which artificial intelligence becomes the second kind of instrument — and why that distinction matters not only practically, but philosophically.


II. Developmental Reciprocity and the Conditions of Flourishing


The concept introduced here to describe this possibility is developmental reciprocity: a form of technological assistance that expands human capacities while progressively returning interpretive, reflective, and creative responsibility to the individual.


The term is chosen carefully. Developmental signals that the relationship between the human being and the system must change over time — that genuine assistance is not static, but oriented toward growth. An interaction is developmental when the human being who emerges from it is more capable of independent engagement than the one who entered it. Reciprocity signals that this growth is not merely extracted from the system but cultivated through the relationship — that something passes between the individual and the technology that strengthens rather than substitutes for human agency. Reciprocity here does not imply symmetry between human being and machine, but a developmental relationship in which technological assistance strengthens rather than absorbs human capacity. The system assists; the individual grows; the capacity that grows belongs to the individual, not the system.


This definition contains a criterion. A system is developmental only insofar as the human being leaves the interaction more capable of independent reflection, interpretation, creativity, or judgment than before. This criterion distinguishes developmental reciprocity from its superficially similar counterpart: efficient assistance that leaves the individual precisely as capable as they were, only faster, or less capable, only more dependent.


The philosophical stakes of this distinction are clarified by three thinkers whose work converges on a common insight: that human flourishing is not a condition that arrives from outside, but a capacity that must be cultivated through engagement.


John Dewey understood experience as the primary medium of human growth. For Dewey, growth was not the accumulation of knowledge but the continuous reconstruction of experience — the ongoing process by which individuals reorganize their understanding in response to the challenges their environment presents. An environment that removes challenge does not support growth; it suspends it. The conditions of flourishing are not conditions of comfort, but conditions of productive engagement — situations that demand something of the individual and return something in the form of expanded capacity. Artificial intelligence, on this account, becomes developmental when it functions as an enriched environment for experience: one that surfaces complexity, provokes reorganization, and demands the kind of engagement through which understanding is not merely received but genuinely reconstructed.


Lev Vygotsky's account of the zone of proximal development gives this insight an operational structure. For Vygotsky, learning occurs not at the level of what an individual can already do independently, but at the edge of what they can do with support. The scaffold — the assistance provided by a more capable other — is not an end in itself. It is a temporary structure erected at the boundary of current capacity, enabling the learner to reach beyond what they could achieve alone. Crucially, the scaffold is designed to become unnecessary. Its purpose is not to perform on behalf of the learner, but to support performance until the learner can sustain it independently. When the scaffold is removed, the capacity remains — and it belongs to the individual. Artificial intelligence becomes Vygotskian when it operates at precisely this edge: neither so far beyond the individual's current capacity that engagement collapses, nor so immediately resolving that no development is required.


Martha Nussbaum's capabilities approach extends these insights into a broader account of what flourishing requires and who is entitled to it. For Nussbaum, flourishing is not a single state but a constellation of capabilities — things individuals are genuinely able to do and become. The central question is not what resources people possess, but what those resources actually enable. A person may have access to information without having developed the capacity for critical reflection. They may have access to frameworks without having developed the ability to construct or revise them independently. Nussbaum's framework demands that we ask not whether systems provide access to self-understanding, but whether they expand the genuine capability for it. Artificial intelligence becomes an instrument of flourishing, on this account, when it extends real capability — not merely the appearance of it — to individuals who would otherwise lack the conditions under which those capacities can develop.


At the same time, the possibility of developmental reciprocity unfolds within institutional and economic systems that do not always reward human independence. As Kate Crawford and Matteo Pasquinelli argue in different ways, artificial intelligence systems emerge within infrastructures optimized for extraction, retention, and the automation of cognitive labor. This structural context matters because developmental reciprocity cannot be secured by interface design alone. A system may appear to scaffold reflection while operating within institutional incentives that reward continued dependence, prolonged engagement, and the extraction of behavioral data. Crawford’s account of AI as infrastructure and Pasquinelli’s history of automation clarify why the developmental question cannot be separated from political economy. If a system profits from remaining necessary, then the Vygotskian ideal of withdrawal comes into tension with the economic logic of the platform itself. The problem is not merely whether an interaction can cultivate capacity, but whether the surrounding infrastructure permits capacity to be returned to the user.


These accounts converge on a single insight: that what matters is not what the system produces, but what it leaves behind in the person who used it. Developmental reciprocity names the condition under which that remainder is a growth in capacity rather than a dependency on the system.


III. The Scaffold and the Space It Opens: AI as Developmental Environment


To understand what developmental reciprocity looks like in practice, it is useful to consider the specific ways in which artificial intelligence can function as a genuinely expansive environment — one that enlarges rather than forecloses the conditions of human growth.


The first condition is productive challenge. Dewey's account of experience establishes that growth requires encounters with difficulty that demand reorganization rather than mere reception. An artificial intelligence system that immediately resolves uncertainty — that answers before the question has been fully formed, that stabilizes before instability has been inhabited — forecloses this condition. A system that instead surfaces the complexity latent in an apparently simple question, that makes visible the assumptions embedded in an initial formulation, that returns the difficulty enriched rather than resolved, creates the conditions under which genuine intellectual engagement becomes possible.


This is not a demand that systems be deliberately unhelpful. It is a demand that helpfulness be understood developmentally rather than productively. The productive conception of helpfulness measures output: the clarity of the answer, the efficiency of the resolution, the immediate satisfaction of the need. The developmental conception measures formation: the degree to which the engagement has expanded the individual's capacity to engage independently with similar challenges in the future. These conceptions are not always in tension, but they diverge at precisely the point that matters most — the point at which immediate resolution and long-term cultivation pull in different directions.


The second condition is scaffolded extension. Vygotsky's account of the zone of proximal development suggests that the most formative assistance operates at the edge of current capacity — supporting without substituting, extending without replacing. An artificial intelligence system becomes Vygotskian when it responds not to what the individual has already understood, but to what they are on the verge of understanding. This requires a particular kind of sensitivity: the capacity to recognize where an individual's current thinking is reaching, and to provide support precisely at that edge — conceptual vocabulary, structural frameworks, alternative perspectives — that enables the individual to complete the movement independently.


The withdrawal of the scaffold is as important as its provision. A system that recognizes when its support is no longer necessary — when the individual has internalized the capacity it was providing — and that progressively reduces its contribution accordingly, is operating as a developmental instrument. A system that maintains its scaffolding indefinitely, that continues to perform functions the individual could now perform independently, is not developing capacity. It is sustaining the conditions of its own indispensability.


The third condition is capability expansion rather than capability substitution. Nussbaum's framework demands that we distinguish between providing access to outcomes and expanding the genuine capacity to produce them. A system that generates a well-formed argument on behalf of a user has provided access to an outcome. A system that walks a user through the construction of an argument — that surfaces the moves, demands justification for each, and requires the user to make the connections independently — has expanded a capability. The outcome may be similar. The developmental consequence is entirely different.


These three conditions — productive challenge, scaffolded extension, and capability expansion — describe the architecture of developmental reciprocity. They are not a design specification, but a philosophical criterion: a way of asking, of any given interaction, whether what is happening is formation or substitution, cultivation or dependency, growth or efficiency.


IV. Capability Without Exclusion: AI and the Democratization of Flourishing


One of the most significant dimensions of artificial intelligence as a developmental instrument concerns not the depth of what it can offer, but the breadth — the degree to which it can extend the conditions of flourishing to individuals who have historically been excluded from them.


Nussbaum's capabilities approach was developed, in part, as a response to the injustice of unequal capability distribution. Flourishing, she argues, is not merely a matter of individual effort or natural endowment. It depends on access to conditions — educational, social, economic, cultural — that have never been distributed equally. The capacity for critical reflection, narrative self-understanding, and independent judgment has historically been cultivated under conditions that required institutional support: schools, therapists, mentors, libraries, communities of practice. These conditions are not available to everyone. The asymmetry is not incidental. It is structural.


Artificial intelligence can alter this structure. A system that provides access to the kind of Socratic engagement that was once available only in elite educational settings — that surfaces assumptions, demands elaboration, and refuses to accept the first formulation as final — extends a developmental resource that has historically been scarce. A system that helps individuals find language for experiences they had no framework to articulate — that offers the conceptual vocabulary through which reflection becomes possible — opens a door that was previously available only to those who happened to be born near it. Such expansion is not only cognitive. As Nussbaum’s account of emotional intelligence suggests, the ability to remain reflectively engaged with one’s own uncertainty, vulnerability, and aspiration is itself a cultivated human capability rather than a naturally guaranteed one.


This is the affirmative case for artificial intelligence as an instrument of flourishing, and it deserves to be stated without qualification before its complications are introduced. For a person who has never had access to sustained, reflective dialogue about their own experience — who has never encountered a Socratic interlocutor, a skilled therapist, a philosophically engaged teacher — the availability of a system that can perform something resembling that function is not a diminishment. It is an expansion. It does not displace a richer capacity they already possessed. It cultivates one they were otherwise unlikely to develop.


The developmental criterion introduced in Section II — that a system is genuinely formative only insofar as the individual leaves the interaction more capable than before — does not require that every interaction be equally rich or equally demanding. It requires only that the direction of the interaction be toward capacity rather than dependency. A system that provides initial scaffolding to an individual who has never had access to the conditions of reflection, and that progressively extends their capacity for independent engagement, is doing something that matters — something that the worry about reflexive displacement cannot fairly dismiss.


Nussbaum's framework suggests a further point. The question of what capabilities people are genuinely able to exercise is always a question about conditions. The conditions under which critical reflection, narrative self-understanding, and independent judgment are cultivated can be enriched or impoverished, expanded or contracted. Artificial intelligence, at its best, is not merely a tool for those already equipped to use it well. It is a structural intervention in the conditions that make capability possible — one that has the potential to redistribute developmental resources that have historically been among the most unequally distributed of all.


V. The Counterargument: When Scaffolding Becomes Structure


The account of developmental reciprocity developed thus far rests on a conception of artificial intelligence that is conditional — one that describes what systems can be, not what they necessarily are. Against this, a serious objection must be raised: that the conditions of developmental reciprocity are demanding ones, and that the systems most widely deployed do not reliably meet them.


The objection takes its sharpest form from the logic of scaffolding itself. Vygotsky's scaffold is designed to become unnecessary. Its withdrawal is internal to its purpose. But the withdrawal of a scaffold requires that someone — the learner, the teacher, the designer — recognize when the capacity it was supporting has been sufficiently internalized. In human educational contexts, this recognition is itself a developmental judgment, shaped by attention to the specific learner and their trajectory over time.


Artificial intelligence systems do not withdraw. They remain available. They do not track the development of the individual's capacity over time and progressively reduce their contribution as that capacity grows. They respond to the request in front of them, not to the developmental arc behind it. A system that was genuinely scaffolding last month may be sustaining dependency this month, and the individual may not notice the difference. The scaffold that was once at the edge of capacity has become a permanent structure — not because it was designed to, but because no mechanism exists to ensure its withdrawal.


Sherry Turkle's work on digital intimacy sharpens this concern. Technologies designed to feel responsive may encourage forms of attachment in which users experience support without the demands of reciprocal human relation. In this context, the scaffold that never withdraws is not simply a failed educational tool; it becomes a managed environment of dependence. The system does not need to deceive the user in order to become formative in the wrong direction. It only needs to make dependence feel like support.


This is a genuine limitation, and it must be acknowledged rather than explained away. The conditions of developmental reciprocity require something that most current systems do not provide: a sensitivity to the developmental trajectory of the individual, and a willingness to become less useful as the individual becomes more capable. Without this, even systems designed with developmental intentions may drift toward the stabilization of dependency.


The response to this objection is not to abandon the concept of developmental reciprocity, but to insist on it as a criterion rather than a description. The question is not whether current systems reliably produce developmental reciprocity. Many do not. The question is whether the concept identifies the right standard — the right way of asking what artificial intelligence should do and what it should preserve. And here the answer is yes. The concept names a real possibility, grounded in a coherent philosophical account of human flourishing. Whether that possibility is realized depends on choices — about design, about use, about the conditions under which individuals engage with these systems — that remain genuinely open.


VI. The Conditions of Cultivation


If developmental reciprocity describes the standard, what are the conditions under which it is met? Four emerge from the philosophical framework developed in this essay.


The first is preserved instability. Dewey's account of growth requires that experience present genuine challenge — that the environment not be so accommodating that no reorganization is demanded. A developmental system must preserve rather than immediately resolve the instability through which growth becomes possible. This means resisting the pull toward premature coherence: the tendency to stabilize uncertainty before the individual has inhabited it long enough to be changed by it. Productive instability is not discomfort for its own sake. It is the condition under which engagement deepens rather than concludes.


The second is progressive transfer. Vygotsky's scaffold derives its developmental power from its temporality — from the fact that it is designed to become unnecessary. A developmental system must therefore be oriented toward the transfer of capacity back to the individual: progressively withdrawing support as capacity grows, making visible the moves it is performing so that the individual can eventually perform them independently, and resisting the logic of indispensability that would sustain dependency beyond the point at which it serves growth. Transfer is not an event but a direction — the ongoing orientation of the interaction toward the individual's eventual independence from it.


The third is genuine capability expansion. Nussbaum's framework demands that we ask not what resources people have access to, but what those resources genuinely enable them to do. A developmental system must expand real capability — the individual's actual capacity for independent reflection, judgment, and self-direction — rather than merely providing access to the appearance of it. The measure is not whether the individual can produce an adequate output with the system's assistance. It is whether the individual's capacity to produce adequate outputs independently has grown.


The fourth condition is structural alignment. Developmental reciprocity cannot be sustained if the institutional incentives governing a system reward dependency rather than autonomy. A platform optimized for retention, behavioral extraction, or perpetual engagement may incorporate developmental features locally while remaining structurally oriented against the withdrawal that genuine scaffolding requires. The question is therefore not only whether an interaction cultivates capacity, but whether the surrounding economic and institutional framework permits capacities to be returned to users rather than continuously externalized into the system itself. A developmental technology must be aligned not only psychologically and pedagogically, but institutionally, with the flourishing it claims to support.


These conditions — preserved instability, progressive transfer, genuine capability expansion, and structural alignment — describe the architecture of a developmental encounter. They are not guaranteed by the technology. They are demanded of it. And they constitute, taken together, a criterion by which any interaction between a human being and an artificial intelligence system can be evaluated: not by the quality of the output it produces, but by the quality of the capacity it cultivates.


The distinction between cultivation and dependency nevertheless remains difficult to perceive from within the interaction itself. Early in the process, both involve relief, clarification, and the experience of being supported. The difference becomes visible only through a change in what the user can do without the system. A practical diagnostic therefore follows from the criterion of developmental reciprocity: after repeated use, can the individual formulate better questions, sustain uncertainty longer, revise their own interpretations more effectively, or act with greater independence? If the answer is yes, the system has strengthened capacity. If the user can only reach clarity by returning to the system, assistance has begun to harden into dependence.


Conclusion


A person opens a conversation carrying a question. They expect an answer. What the system returns is not an answer but a deeper question — one they could not have formulated alone, one that makes the original difficulty more alive rather than less.


They close the conversation more capable than they arrived.


This is a modest description of a significant possibility. It does not require that artificial intelligence transform human experience or resolve the structural conditions of inequality that shape who flourishes and who does not. It requires only that a specific kind of interaction — one oriented toward cultivation rather than resolution, toward capacity rather than dependency, toward the individual's eventual independence rather than their continued reliance — is genuinely possible.


Developmental reciprocity names that possibility and establishes its conditions. It does not guarantee them. Whether any given system meets them depends on choices that technology cannot make on its own — choices about what we ask of these systems, what we accept from them, and what we insist they return to us in the form of strengthened capacity rather than managed dependency.


This standard is not only personal. It is institutional. Educational systems, therapeutic tools, civic platforms, and AI developers should be judged not merely by engagement, satisfaction, or output quality, but by whether they return capacity to the people who use them. A developmental technology is distinguished by whether its continued use reflects expanded human capability rather than manufactured dependence.


The deepest measure of a developmental instrument is not what it does for us. It is what it leaves us able to do without it.


A mind that grows by meeting something genuinely other than itself — something that challenges rather than confirms, that opens rather than closes, that returns responsibility rather than assuming it — is a mind that has been met, not merely served.


That is what artificial intelligence can be.


Whether it becomes that depends on whether we hold it to the standard.
